The war on DAW softwares always argued among producers, musicians and songwriters. Logic? Pro Tools? Which one?
To get started, let’s understand what’s a DAW. DAW stands for Digital Audio Workstation, whereby it means tapeless and computer based system designed to sample, record, edit and tweak audio! With the many DAW available nowadays, cost to record music has decrease significantly and many people are able to record even in the bedroom now. Hence, the name ‘Virtual Studio’ come alive.
Out of the so many DAW available outside in the market though, there a few big names known as Logic Studio, Pro Tools, Cakewalk, Cubase & Fruity Loops. The argument and comments on which are the best have a been a great war, and this have contributed to the confusion of many newbs.
Well here’s the thought. You drive a car, do you? Does it run with the Shell’s petrol or Mobil’s petrol? Well, it doesn’t matter, does it? You don’t quite care which company you buy petrol from to run the car do you? Makes practical sense, in DAWs as well, you don’t care which one you use as long as it suits you.
All the DAWs mentioned above are great, and used by many different producers. When you do a work, what’s important is the final product, and not how you do it.
Though, there’s an area where it does make some difference.
Most of the music you’ve seen in big time movies, and many of the big time albums are produced with Pro Tools. If you’re a student looking to work under a post production company, it’s good if you get good foundation of pro tools. Pro Tools is considered one of the world class softwares, even used by many recording studios in Malaysia. Getting up techniques on using Pro Tools would give you the foundation, where this skills are easily transferrable to other DAW usage.
On the other hand, correct or not, Cubase or Reason would more be branded as “home studio”, for the home musician. Stating having experience operating these softwares on your resume or CV to apply for a professional audio studio, wouldn’t be so impressive. Those softwares are simply not branded as world class professional softwares.
So it depends again, in the recording studio, use what you’ll need to use that you’re comfortable with. If you like Cubase, and is able to produce good music, use it! At the end of the day, every software are meant to fulfil your audio job, and you’re better off being a professional in the fundamentals of audio rather than to war over softwares.
There are so many DAW softwares out there, and use one that works for you, for all the industry cares is about your final output!
